Devon Fegen-Herdman, MSSA

I have seen the positive impact minimalism, decluttering and home organization has had on my own life and I want to spread that joy and peace to others. My home has never been perfect and over time I have read many books, watched all the shows, listened to podcasts and more to learn all the tips and tricks to get my home under control. Now I am ready to share that magic with you.

Trained as a Social Worker

Although decluttering with others is a newer venture for me, working with and helping others has been my entire career. I graduated from Case Western Reserve University in 2005 with a Master’s Degree in Social Work and have been working in the field ever since. I have extensive training and experience in home visits, working with clients, and helping people with change. I am attuned to my client’s emotions and will work at a pace that is comfortable for you. Although professional organizing is not a social work service (and these services are not being provided under my social work license), I consider it social work adjacent.

Experienced at working with Seniors

I worked at Hospice of the Western Reserve for many years meeting with folks in hospitals to complete admissions. I was an advanced certified hospice and palliative care social worker from 2010-2016. I always center the independence and wishes of the senior I am working with and am happy to communicate with other family members if requested. If you have medical or physical limitations that make decluttering difficult, I can easily adapt my assistance to fit your needs.

Skilled at managing ‘stuff’

I have years of work experience running a therapeutic art classroom at a mental health day treatment center. Cleaning, storing, preparing and maintaining the various art materials for up to 90 participants a week was a large portion of this work. It requires effective systems to be in place so that the space does not become cluttered and messy. Teaching participants easy-to-follow cleanup routines was a must.

I also co-founded a thrift store for art supplies (Upcycle Parts Shop it’s really awesome, you should check it out!) and continue to serve on the non-profit board. We developed systems to receive and sort material donations. We visited many area businesses and viewed their storage and disposal practices to identify usable items that could be pulled out of their waste streams and reused creatively. This was the ultimate crash course in how to manage many different items in a neat and organized way to prevent a cluttered look and feel in our storefront.

I was born and raised in greater Cleveland and am happily settled in Avon where I live with my husband, 2 children, dog and cat. I love playing soccer, reading, making art, and camping with my family.
