One mom we worked with had incredible toys for her three girls, an amazing array of dress up outfits, a play kitchen stocked with every kind of pretend food, a small doctor's play set, a craft area, high quality wooden toys, and even large motor play items like yoga mats and a swing. She was an amazing, thoughtful parent, and she was also anxious and stressed. Everything had to go back in its exact place, a system so precise that even her kids, and other visiting parents, couldn't get it right. She once told us about a parent innocently scooping toy ice cream, produce, pasta, and silverware into the same basket when the "frozen foods" were supposed to go with the freezer items. Every night after the kids went to bed, she and her husband would spend an hour putting the playroom back in order. It was unsustainable.
We suggested reducing the volume of everything. If you're stressed, less is almost always the answer. We helped her select true favorites and test out storing the rest, not getting rid of it yet, in a nearby empty storage closet with a lock. We thinned things out significantly, and honestly, there was so much to begin with that her kids barely noticed anything was gone. That's the key: toys need to go somewhere the kids can't get to on their own. If they can access an overflow stash, they'll tear through it, spread it everywhere, and undo the whole system.
We also built a cleanup routine her children could actually participate in, one basket for all the kitchen items, for example, good enough instead of perfectly sorted. Letting go of the desire for a perfect put away system was the real shift, not just a physical change to the space, but a mindset change too. It wasn't easy for her, but once she made it, her kids could help, the nightly hour of parent cleanup disappeared, and she was noticeably less stressed.

How long does a playroom take?
It depends on the size of the space and how many toys are involved, but most playrooms are completed in a single session. We'll give you a realistic estimate up front, and let you know if we recommend any additional or different storage strategies based on what you have.
Will my kids be involved in the decision-making?
That's up to you and depends on their age. Some parents prefer to declutter while kids are at school, others like to involve their children in choosing what stays. We can work either way. Most of the time, you already know what your kids go-to toys are and are able to identify the small things that likely won’t even be remembered anyway. As kids get older, it’s recommended that they do have a say. You want to teach them the ability to let go of items on their own, it’s an important life skill in today’s world.
What if my kids won't let go of anything?
This is common, and we have strategies for it, from asking which toys are true favorites to setting aside a "maybe" box to revisit later. We go at a pace that works for your family. Often, boxing up a portion of items can be very helpful and reduce the emotional attachment for kids. If you are worried that they might ask about something, you can hang on to the boxes to see.
